Betty Hakes presented facts about affiliate marketing at the most recent New Media Cincinnati event April 9, 2011. As part of her presentation, Betty prompted several important questions a company or individual should consider before participating in affiliate marketing. These questions included the following:

Do you have what it takes to be a successful affiliate marketer? Is your company ready to launch an affiliate program? What are the key elements to be successful in affiliate marketing?

Do you have what it takes to be a successful affiliate marketer?

Affiliate marketing is when an affiliate (e.g., publisher or content provider) is paid when a lead or transaction occurs at the advertisers website through which the customer visit originates through an affiliate link. Hakes says, “Affilate marketing is NOT multi-level marketing (MLM).” Also, affiliate marketing will not make you rich. It could become a steady income stream eventually.

There are several ways to become an affiliate marketer. These include being a content provider who owns or manages a website, participating in email marketing, using pay-per call strategies, starting a mobile affiliate program, or leveraging couponers ad datafeed sites.

A successful affiliate marketer is able to reach large, but niche audiences. Understanding search engine optimization and creating a personal brand is crucial. Ultimately, showing results will allow you to negotiate better terms.

Is your company ready to launch an affiliate program?

Launching a successful affiliate marketing company is not easy. It requires a person or company to define their market niche, understand how to reach existing and potential customers, and extensive testing. Launching an affiliate marketing program might not be for you unless you are prepared to do the leg work.

What are the key elements to be successful in affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing requires the ability to understand and partner with affiliate platforms (e.g., RingRevenue.com). Launching a successful affiliate marketing campaign begins by following several critical steps. These steps include research, monitoring whether your site currently converts visitors and making sure landing pages are optimized for your target market. Adhering to current social media ethics and laws outlined by the Word of Mouth Marketing Association (WOMMA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which enforce disclosure of compensation for promoting products, is strongly recommended as well.
